Social Studies Test on Monday 12/03

The following are the notes you need to revise and study well for the social studies test on Monday. 




WORLD FAMOUS LANDMARKS
REVISION SHEET

1.  THE TAJ MAHAL

-          Located in Agra, India.
-          It took 22 years to be built
-          Built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz as a resting place for her tomb
-          It was built 350 years ago
-          Made out of white marbles, gems, and stones
-          Surrounding it there is a mosque, a pool, and a guesthouse

2.  THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

-          Located in New York Liberty Island
-          It was France that gave The Statue of Liberty to America to celebrate their independence from the British
-          On her right hand, Lady Liberty is holding a torch, and on the other hand, she is holding a tablet where the date ( July 4th 1776) is carved.
-          She is wearing a crown that has 7 rays which represents the 7 continents and 7 seas

3.  THE EIFFEL TOWER

-          Located in Paris. Built by Gustave Eiffel in 1889
-          It took 2 years to be built
-          It is 324 meters long
-          At first, the French didn’t like it, but after a while they learned to appreciate it.
-          It was also useful because of antennas and network that served as good communication service

4.  THE LEANING TOWER OF PISA

-          A bell tower in Pisa, Italy.
-          Known because of its tilt ( leaning)
-          There are 7 bells inside the tower
-          Almost 57 meters long
-          It has been leaning for 800 years
-          It is leaning because its foundation ( base) is soft

5.  THE PYRAMIDS OF GIZA

-          The oldest of the seven wonders of the world
-          Built around 2540 B.C  and took 20 years to get built
-          Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu ordered the pyramids the be built so he can be buried in it
-          Khufu is Khafre’s son, and Menkaure is Khafre’s son.

6.  BIG BEN

-          London’s most famous Landmark is also known as Elizabeth Tower ( after Queen Elizabeth’s name)
-          There 4 clocks. 1 on each side
-          They light up every night
-          The clock never stopped ticking. Even after a bomb destroyed the chamber during The World War
-          It chimes every hour




7.  SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE

-          Located in Sydney, Australia
-          Designed by Jorn Utzon, a Danish Architect in 1957
-          It is the biggest Music location
-          It has 1000 rooms for music shows

8.  THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA

-          Stretches around 6300 kilometers
-          Longest structure ever built  by humans
-          Some humans have died during the construction
-          The main reason for building this wall was because they wanted to protect themselves from invasion and attacks from the North

9.  MOUNT RUSHMORE

-          Also called The President’s Mountain
-          Located in South Dakota , U.S.A
-          It took 14 years to build it
-          Dynamites, hand drills are some of the many thigs that were used to carve the mountain
-          Designed and carved  by Gutzon Burglom when he was 60 years old
-          The four presidents carved on this mountain are : George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt

10.            THE PARTHENON

-          Located in Greece Athens in the middle of a place called The Acropolis
-          It is a temple built for the Greek Goddess Athena
-          Constructed in 447 B.C
